Matavenero is a small village in the mountains of Northwest-Spain. Being a ghosttown for about 20 years it was resettled in 1989 by an international group of people with just one vision: to build up an eco-village.
Since then quite a few projects and buildings have been set up: an independent school, a kindergarten, a bakery, a shop, a cosy restaurant, a bar and an assembly hall. Several small businesses work in the fields of art, culture, consulting and handcrafting.
Two springs nearby provide pure natural drinking water, solar panels produce clean energy for the houses.
Matavenero is a place of absolute quietness, there are no cars in the village and the use of all kinds of noisy stuff is prohibited.
Following the basics of Perma-Culture, organic vegetables and fruits are grown in nearly all gardens.
Medical treatment is done with homoeopathy and related methods (i.e. Shiatsu). Over the years more than 35 children were born in Matavenero.
No matter what your personal interests as a new settler, volunteer or just a visitor are, there are quite a lot of opportunities for everybody: common work groups, project groups, dancing- and meditation-circles or just cooking and playing music together with others.
